Executive Directors: We Need to Hear from You! 

As Brooklyn's community foundation, we strive to strengthen our nonprofit sector in a variety of ways. This year, we want to support Executive Directors through a new peer-to-peer networking group that fosters the sharing of advice, challenges, and triumphs in a confidential and candid environment.

We've created a short survey to inform how we structure the group. We hope that you will take two minutes out of your hectic day to answer a few questions to help us serve your needs. Thank you!

Board Matching: Meet Your Next Board Member

We've had an overwhelming response to our now "sold out" Board Governance Training for Brooklynites who want to join local nonprofit boards. Now we're recruiting nonprofits to sign up for our Board Matchmaking Mixer on April 19 where we'll introduce training participants to organizations that match their interests. Learn more.


Funding 

The New York Community Trust announced its request for proposals for projects to support and highlight the contributions of Muslim, Arab, and South Asian (MASA) communities in New York City. Organizations may apply for one- or two-year grants of up to $100,000 each for projects that will effectively counter anti-Islam prejudice. Apply by March 25.

The Robin Hood Foundation seeks concept papers proposing programs that can produce substantial and measurable change in living standards for Chinese immigrant families in New York City. Submit here by April 1

We Are All Brooklyn Fellowship will award a grant of up to $2,000 to a Brooklyn-based organization that provides non-traditional educational opportunities for 13 to 18-year olds through reading, writing and STEAM. Special consideration will be given to organizations that provide programs for underserved teens that reside in Brooklyn. Application forms can be downloaded at www.waab.org/grant and must be received (not postmarked) by April 12 at 5pm.

Fast Forward's Accelerator for Tech Nonprofits includes a $25,000 grant, 13 weeks of training in San Francisco, and connections to 100 high-caliber mentors. Apply here by April 1.

Know an educator with a bright idea? The Pelican Foundation for Creative Education provides grants to middle and high school teachers for innovative projects that can bring valuable enrichment opportunities to students. More details here.

William T. Grant Foundation seeks applications for research to understand inequality. The foundation will award grants of up to $600,000 in support of research focused on ways to reduce disparities in academic, behavioral, social, and economic outcomes for youth. Application deadline is May 5. 
 


Opportunities

Thinkso Creative is offering its branding services pro bono this summer in "Give a Brand!" The entire Thinkso team, as well as sponsors, will devote a full day to developing new branding and marketing communications for the Give a Brand! winner. The goal is to conceptualize, execute, and deliver materials that will help the nonprofit achieve its mission. Apply here by March 26.

Need more hands on deck? The Murphy Institute at CUNY is launching a Community Semester program this fall that may be able to help. The program will place undergraduate/ graduate interns with community organizations to learn about and contribute towards supporting low-wage community organizing in NYC. Interns will work 28 hours a week for a 15-week semester. The Fund for Public Health in New York, in partnership with the Mayor’s Office of Strategic Partnerships, NYCHA, and Green City Force, is seeking expressions of interest from community-based non-profit organizations to participate in the NYCHA Urban Agriculture Initiative in Canarsie, Brownsville and East Harlem. Submit your application by March 25.

Money for Our Movements is the largest annual gathering for social justice fundraisers and fundraisers of color nationwide. The three-day conference, held August 12-14 in Denver, features 70+ workshops, lively debates, and plenaries where fundraising leaders share their wisdom for building more sustainable movements. Brooklyn Community Foundation grantees may be eligible for a group discount.

BRIC hosts "SENTENCED TO FAIL: Race & Mass Incarceration, A #BHeard Community Town Hall" on March 24 from 7-9pm at the BRIC Arts Media House. #BHeard at the community event and RSVP today

The Brooklyn Debate League Championships will take place Saturday, April 9 at Midwood High School. More than 200 high school students are expected to attend and volunteer judges are needed. Contact Militza Diaz to get involved. 

The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce is accepting nominations for the 2016 Building Brooklyn Awards, its annual real estate industry event recognizing recently completed and new construction projects that have a positive impact on the borough's economy. Submit your applications by March 28.

Community Board 14 Youth Conference 2016 takes place on March 31 from 4-7PM at the Flatbush YMCA. Over 500 young people ages 12-19 attend this event each year to learn about opportunities from CBOs, city agencies and local businesses.

Registration is open for "Paving the Way to Healing and Recovery: Conversations With Young Men Who Survive Violence," a conference co-sponsored by Crown Heights Community Mediation Center and others on April 25, focusing on promising strategies for young men of color who have survived violence and leave participants with concrete tools and deeper hope. Register here for free.

#DACA-Squad is a new initiative from Atlas DIY to help unlock access to legal support for New York City's immigrants. Atlas is training nine members to assist individuals with citizenship, adjustment of status, employment authorization, and DACA applications, as well as screen candidates who may be eligible for immigration assistance. If your organization is interested in having these services at your location, as well as materials to spread the word, fill out this brief survey. Email Coordinator Natasha Lee for more information.

Brooklyn Historical Society has launched Voices of Crown Heights, a multi-year oral history project on the history and future of Crown Heights, a neighborhood that has taken on continued national significance in conversations on ethnic relations, racial justice, and urban renewal. Listen to sample stories and read more about the program here.
